Septarian calcite formed when small marine animals died in volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. After sinking to the ocean floor and decomposing, they accumulated in layers of sediment that formed balls or nodules. Eventually, when exposed to air, these nodules dried out and cracked, and calcite deposits formed inside these cracks in distinct swirls and branching patterns.
